Brewing Innovation

Driven by Science and Innovation

We were incredibly honored to be shortlisted as finalists for the Business Innovation  SIBA Business Awards 2024 and 2025! We've also been shortlisted for a Tees Valley Sustainability Innovation Award in partnership with Decerna and most recently Tees Business Awards for Innovation.

As a small team with a unique setup, being selected alongside much larger breweries and businesses is a huge achievement for us. This recognition has inspired us even more to continue pushing boundaries and striving for excellence in everything we do.

Our team is fueled by a passion for science and engineering, with expertise spanning Chemical, Mechanical, Pharmaceutical, Civil Engineering, and Computer Science. Before founding the brewery, we gained years of experience in these fields, allowing us to quickly adapt, build custom machinery, and develop processes that rival the largest brewers in terms of consistency. Recently, we’ve partnered with Teesside University on an Innovate UK research project focused on brewery waste, advancing sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

UK-First Research: Turning Brewery Waste into Sustainable Solutions

Three Brothers is proud to be part of a collaborative research initiative with Teesside University and Leeds University. This project explores the potential of using waste materials from breweries, such as spent brewers grains, as an alternative to the imported coconut husks traditionally used to produce Activated Carbon for filtration systems.

Currently, the production of Activated Carbon relies heavily on coconut husks, contributing to significant CO2 emissions. By investigating homegrown sources like spent brewers grains, we aim to find a more sustainable material. The sugars extracted during the brewing process may help make the carbon produced from these grains less contaminated, providing a promising solution for a more eco-friendly future.

Supported by Innovate UK, this project is in partnership with Teesside University, Albumedix (now part of Sartorius), Biome Bioplastics Limited, the University of Leeds, and the Biorenewables Development Centre.

Ingredients & Beer Development: Pushing the Boundaries of Flavour

At Three Brothers, we're constantly exploring new technologies and innovations to revolutionise beer. Since 2016, the pace of advancement in the brewing industry has been lightning-fast, and we’re right at the forefront.

New hops are arriving from all corners of the globe, packed with more power and flavor than ever before. We've expanded our yeast collection from just one strain to over a hundred, unlocking the potential for unique flavors, new styles, and even low-alcohol yeasts that cater to specific needs like gluten-free, diabetic-friendly, and naturally sour beers. Our use of cutting-edge enzymes allows us to create gluten-free brews that are more flavourful and even lower in calories.

As a brewery, we’re driven by innovation and committed to incorporating these advancements into our beers, making them more vibrant, inclusive, and exciting. We love experimenting with new ingredients and techniques, always striving to craft beers that push the limits of what’s possible.

Today, most of our beers are vegan-friendly (except those with milk or honey), and our bottles are certified gluten-free, with plans to expand even further. Our top-selling cask beers, Trilogy Blonde and Northern Pale, are available throughout the North, tested for consistent quality and flavor.

We're incredibly proud to have lunched our debut low carbohydrate beer, Northern Light. This absolutely beautiful beer was brewed by Russ and it delivered on all levels. As a type 2 diabetic Russ is incredibly passionate about flavour packed beers without the sugar spike, something which is a challenge for many diabetic beer drinkers. Northern Light was born! We packaged into can, cask and keg and it flew out with Rave National Beer Reviews too! It's a hazy low carbohydrate pale at 4.7% with the following in a 440ml can - 136 kcal, 4g Carbohydrate, 0.44g Sugar.

We've also launched our debut Keto Beer too in can and keg, another real success not sacrificing flavour for the brief. This Low Calorie & Protein infused IPA was unfined and incredibly sessionable at 4.2%. More stock coming soon!

Leveraging our backgrounds in mechanical, chemical, and pharmaceutical engineering, we’ve upgraded our brewing equipment to enhance hop infusion and flavor extraction. Our in-house cooling systems ensure precise fermentation, allowing us to craft beers with high or low-temperature yeasts, unlocking even more possibilities.

Our low alcohol pale is currently in tank getting ready to make it's debut in can, cask and keg. Another huge achievement for a small brewery like ours. We've been busy behind the scenes working on pasteurising and brewing techniques to make this possible on a small but consistent scale.
