UK first research

Three Brothers are part of a group of businesses working with Teesside University and Leeds University. The project is looking into the possibility of using waste brewery materials as an alternative material for Activated Carbon which is used in all sorts of filteration systems.

Currently the primary source for this is imported coconut husks which creates huge amounts of waste CO2 so the ideal of finding a home grown source. Our hope is that spent brewers grains offer an equivalent material especially as the sugars extracted during the mashing process make the carbon less contaminated.

This project is supported through Innovate uk and is in partnership with Teesside University, Albumedix now a part of Sartorius, Biome Bioplastics Limited, University of Leeds and Biorenewables Development Centre.
